There are basically two methods that can be used to know if and when an android has been rooted.
1. Check Out for kingroot.
If kingroot is installed in the phone, then launch it and if you are not prompted to Root the phone that means, it's been rooted. I mentioned kingroot because it is one of the most popular rooting app for Android Phones in Nigeria.
2. Use Root Checker
Download an app called root checker from Google play store and launch it. Follow the instructions and you'll know if the phone had been rooted.
There are other methods which involves installing apps that would not install if the phone is not rooted.
From the above methods, you don't need to be a geek before you can check if an android phone is rooted.
